As the Opposition protested against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay’s remarks on Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi in the Lok Sabha, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said the Speaker has the power to take action against the member. Kiren Rijiju also said that such remarks should not be made by any member.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Meanwhile, Speaker Om Birla has cautioned all Lok Sabha members to maintain dignity of the House. \u201cWhile such remarks are expunged, in future, no member should make such remarks in their speeches or make remarks while sitting on their seats,\u201d Om Birla said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

As the Opposition members kept protesting against Abhijit Gangopadhyay’s remarks on Gaurav Gogoi, Om Birla said the BJP MP has been warned over his remarks. \u201cMembers can express their views, participate in discussions but should also ensure the respect and dignity of the House. Everyone should work towards increasing the dignity of the House and the member concerned has been cautioned against making such remarks in the future,\u201d Om Birla said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Abhijit Gangopadhyay, the former judge of the Calcutta High Court and BJP MP from West Bengal, got into a fiery exchange with Deputy Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi during his maiden speech in Parliament. It was when he made certain remarks against Gaurav Gogoi that were later expunged from the record by the Speaker.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

On Thursday, July 25, the Lok Sabha was adjourned twice in the post-lunch period on Thursday as a war of words broke out between the members of the House.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Former Calcutta High Court judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay, who won the Talmuk Lok Sabha seat in West Bengal in the recently concluded general elections 2024, is also set to be a first-time MP. Abhijit Gangopadhyay had resigned as a judge of the high court and joined the BJP.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

During his Lok Sabha campaigns, he was banned from campaigning for 24 hours by the Election Commission of India (ECI) over an ‘undignified’ remark against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
