The 81st Venice Film Festival is set to dazzle cinephiles with an impressive lineup of high-profile films and star-studded casts. Announced by artistic director Alberto Barbera and new president of the Venice Biennale, Pietrangelo Buttafuoco, this year\u2019s festival promises a rich mix of genres, established names, and potential discoveries.<\/p>\n

Headlining the festival is Todd Phillips\u2019 Joker 2: Folie \u00e0 Deux<\/i>, the musical sequel to the 2019 hit Joker<\/i>. Starring Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix, the film is in the running for the top prize. Another major contender is Luca Guadagnino\u2019s Queer<\/i>, an adaptation of William S. Burroughs\u2019 novel featuring Daniel Craig as a heroin-addicted American expat in Mexico. Drew Starkey co-stars as the object of his obsession.<\/p>\n

The festival opens with Tim Burton\u2019s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice<\/i>, a sequel to his 1988 classic, featuring Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Monica Bellucci. Out-of-competition highlights include Jon Watts\u2019 action comedy Wolfs<\/i>, starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt, and Harmony Korine\u2019s thriller Baby Invasion<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Pedro Almod\u00f3var\u2019s first English-language film, The Room Next Door<\/i>, stars Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton and is expected to make a significant impact. The film follows the success of Almod\u00f3var\u2019s Parallel Mothers<\/i>, which won the Best Actress award at Venice for Pen\u00e9lope Cruz.<\/p>\n

Pablo Larra\u00edn returns with Maria<\/i>, a biopic of opera singer Maria Callas starring Angelina Jolie. Known for his compelling portrayals of historical figures, Larra\u00edn\u2019s previous works Spencer<\/i> and Jackie<\/i> also premiered at Venice.<\/p>\n

Brady Corbet\u2019s The Brutalist<\/i> chronicles the life of Holocaust survivor and architect L\u00e1szl\u00f3 T\u00f3th, played by Adrien Brody. The film\u2019s ensemble cast includes Felicity Jones, Joe Alwyn, and Guy Pearce. Corbet\u2019s previous films The Childhood of a Leader<\/i> and Vox Lux<\/i> were also showcased at Venice.<\/p>\n

Justin Kurzel\u2019s The Order<\/i> features Jude Law and Nicholas Hoult in a tale about a white supremacist organization in the 1980s, while Halina Reijn\u2019s Babygirl<\/i>, an erotic thriller starring Nicole Kidman, Antonio Banderas, and Harris Dickinson, adds to the competition\u2019s diversity.<\/p>\n

Alfonso Cuar\u00f3n\u2019s Apple TV+ series Disclaimer<\/i>, starring Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline, and Joe Wright\u2019s M. Son of the Century<\/i>, about Benito Mussolini, are among the festival\u2019s TV offerings.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s international jury will be led by French veteran star Isabelle Huppert, along with jurors James Gray, Andrew Haigh, Agnieszka Holland, Kleber Mendon\u00e7a Filho, Abderrahmane Sissako, Giuseppe Tornatore, Julia von Heinz and Zhang Ziyi.<\/p>\n
