Anna Chancellor says she did not do any research for her role as Lady Frances Grey in My Lady Jane<\/i>. The eight-episode series, starring Dominic Cooper and Jim Broadbent among others, is based on Brodi Ashton, Cynthia Hand and Jodi Meadows\u2019 bestselling YA novels, and re-imagines the life of the Nine Days\u2019 Queen, Lady Jane Grey. Anna plays Lady Frances, the controlling, power-hungry mother of Jane (Emily Bader). \u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew a little bit about Tudor England,\u201d Anna says over a video call from Crete. \u201cI knew about Henry VIII and Hampton Court. I knew that they beheaded many young women and queens.\u201d Tudor England, Anna says, had a strange dichotomy. \u201cThey were incredibly sophisticated, wore fantastic clothes, there were big traders and had this love of art, and yet were extremely violent.\u201d<\/p>\n

The script, Anna says with a laugh was not really historically accurate. \u201cThe main thing was to understand the tone the makers wanted.\u201d <\/p>\n

The 59-year-old actor says it\u2019s \u201cthe normal way\u201d when asked about how she got the role. \u201cI got sent the script, auditioned, put my two or three scenes on tape, (now we actors record ourselves) and sent it. That was that, there was no big drama.\u201d <\/p>\n

An unpleasant woman<\/h4>\n

Though the show does not err particularly on the side of authenticity, Anna says the historical Lady Frances and the one in My Lady Jane <\/i>align with Lady Frances even pinching her daughter. <\/p>\n

\u201cShe has been seen in history as an unpleasant woman. From the diary that Lady Jane Grey wrote it seemed like her mother could have been a little mean, and that\u2019s how she has been viewed in history. I don\u2019t know how accurate that is. In many versions of the story, she is the domineering, scheming, power-crazed mother. And that is what the makers have stuck to in this version.\u201d Henry VIII\u2019s rule was a dramatic time in history, Anna says, which would explain the endless fascination for the period, from Wolf Hall<\/i> to Shardlake <\/i>and umpteen iterations of Henry and Anne Boleyn\u2019s story. <\/p>\n

Public and personal<\/h4>\n

\u201cEngland was ruled by the Roman Catholic Church and to divorce Catherine of Aragon and marry Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII broke away from the church. It is such a mixture of history and the domestic. If somebody wants to leave the Church of Rome to make an alliance with Spain or for complex treaties, the audiences might have slightly lost it,\u201d she adds. \u201cAt one level, this is such an easy story to understand. There is this king who has six wives and publically executes two of them. It is drama, isn\u2019t it?\u201d <\/p>\n

Perks and problems<\/h4>\n

A veteran of many costume dramas including Pride and Prejudice, Downton Abbey<\/i> and The Crown<\/i>, Anna says historicals come with perks and problems. \u201cIt is incredible to have these costumes made for you by some of the top dressmakers. I had a lot of say, I could discuss my costume with the designer. You can bring in paintings, to show what you would like, what you think would be good. I love clothes, history and paintings. It is all great and they even make your own shoes (would you believe that!) and underwear \u2014 corsets that fit you. It gives you an insight into what it would have been like for people living then.\u201d<\/p>\n

That, Anna says, is the good part. \u201cThe difficult bit is being in your corset, your dress and trying to go to the toilet! You\u2019ve got your mike underneath your costume and then you realise you have dropped it in the tiny little porter cabin. There are times when your skirts with their hoops are so wide that you cannot go through the door. You\u2019d have to ask your mate to stand at the door, so you can leave the cubicle door open when using the toilet. The grander you are, the posher your character is, the more stuff you\u2019ve got on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anna says her favourite costume in My Lady Jane<\/i> is one she wears towards the end of the show. \u201cIt is red and gold brocade. Incidentally, a lot of fabric for costume dramas comes from India because they are still making beautiful, handmade, embroidered material. There\u2019s still a very, intense interest in colour in India.\u201d <\/p>\n
