The influence of ruling planets: Understanding your astrological profile

In astrology, each zodiac sign is influenced by a ruling planet which governs their traits and behaviors. Think of this like a dominion, that is influenced by the traits of its ruling party. The entire land that comes in this dominion and where it is mapped in this space have different distributions of the same traits, but it is helpful to recognize what goes on when trying to understand the zodiac system accurately, as not a single sign can be perceived independent of each other. If your Moon is in Capricorn, it matters which house it is in, because each one of those houses is governed by different ruling planets.
We divide these planets into three groups based on their influence and characteristics, and in them, we divide all these planets based on their traits and behaviors.
Luminaries: This group refers to your Sun and Moon, and while not technically a planet, we refer to them as such for convenience. They move very quickly from sign to sign, at least in terms of the giant cosmic stage, and hence they are said to influence day-to-day and other short-term issues.

  • The Sun represents vitality, self-expression, and creativity. It’s their base personality, the root explanation of their being. At the simplest molecule of an individual’s being, this is who they are. As a ruling planet, it governs Leo and influences self-confidence, leadership, and desire for recognition.
  • The Moon affects emotional sensitivity, intuition, and the need for security. As a ruling planet, it governs Cancer—and as is evident, Cancers are deeply connected to their feelings and family bonds.

Inner Planets: This subgroup includes Mercury, Venus, and Mars. They are the fastest moving planets and each of them represents different but vital parts in the anatomy of a human personality.

  • Mercury governs communication intellect and adaptability. It is the planet that rules over Gemini and Virgo, and it makes them excel in mental agility and versatility. It influences how they express their ideas and learn and connect with others.
  • Venus embodies love, beauty, and harmony. It rules over Taurus and Libra, giving them a super focus on pleasure, and aesthetics and keeping their aesthetics balanced. It shapes their approach to love and social connections and is responsible for how they seem to perceive or understand other people
  • Mars represents action, passion, and courage. Sometimes, it is also the planet of aggression. It governs Aries and is the reason why taking challenges head-on seems to be second nature for these signs. They’re assertive, ambitious, and competitive signs.

Social Planets: These planets are Jupiter and Saturn. They have a broader societal impact, as opposed to interpersonal dynamics, they pertain to societal presentation, representation, and communication.

  • Jupiter signifies expansion, wisdom, and abundance. It rules Sagittarius and represents their desire for growth, adventure, and philosophical understanding. It also influences optimism, luck, and spiritual pursuits so if you’ve ever met superstitious but happy-go-lucky sags with a deep, intense energy that is sometimes alternate to what their outward personality is, then you know what’s up. It’s their Jupiter, they can’t help it.
  • Saturn symbolizes discipline, responsibility, and structure. It is the planet that presides over Capricorns, and this sign values hard work, perseverance, and achievement. In a beginner role, these signs throw all of themselves into their work.

Alongside these, we also have outer planets. Planets like

Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto

are categorized in this, but they move too slowly from sign to sign to have any real effect on the short-term lifespan of an individual, often spanning generations in effect. They influence long-term trends and growth.
Scorpios, though traditionally ruled by Mars, is one of the signs that claim these outer planets as the ruling planet. In modern perceptions, this planet is governed by Pluto. It adds intensity and transformation alongside depth to Scorpio’s passionate nature, also giving them an aura of being wise beyond their age.
Aquarius is ruled by Uranus, which sparks innovation, independence, and humanitarian ideals. Pisces is ruled by Neptune, it connects them to their dreams, intuition, and the spiritual realm.
These planets have wider connotations, alongside categorically beneficial and destructive energies. For example, Jupiter and Venus are known to be the better planets—the planets that influence good energies. But Saturn and Mars, well they’re known for not being

too

hot. They’re tougher to navigate, represent troubles, and often the harsher side to justice. However, it all comes together, because together, everything balances each other, and all these planets play an extremely important role in the lifecycle of an individual.
